Checks how well your liver is working by measuring enzymes, proteins and bilirubin.
Also known as: Liver Profile, LFT, Hepatic Function Panel, Liver Health Test
The Liver Function Test (LFT) is a blood test that evaluates how well your liver is working. It measures enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin levels that indicate liver health and help identify inflammation, infection, or liver damage.
Your liver performs hundreds of vital functions including filtering toxins from the blood, producing proteins, storing nutrients, aiding digestion, and metabolizing medicines. Regular liver testing can help detect liver problems early, often before symptoms appear.
Your doctor may recommend an LFT if you have symptoms of liver disease or if you're at risk due to lifestyle or medical conditions. This test helps to:
This test is recommended if you:
Symptoms of liver disease:
1.Albumin
Measures protein produced by the liver, indicating liver function.
2.Total Protein
Evaluates overall protein production by the liver.
3.Globulin
Measures immune-related proteins produced in the body.
4.A/G Ratio
Compares albumin and globulin levels to assess liver health.
5.Total Bilirubin
Checks how efficiently the liver removes waste products from the blood.
6.Direct Bilirubin
Bilirubin that the liver has already processed. Raised levels can point to a problem with bile flow.
7.Indirect Bilirubin
Bilirubin not yet processed by the liver, calculated from total and direct bilirubin.
8.SGPT (ALT)
Measures liver cell damage. High levels may indicate hepatitis or fatty liver disease.
9.SGOT (AST)
Evaluates liver and muscle health. Elevated levels may suggest liver injury.
10.SGOT/SGPT Ratio
Compares AST and ALT levels. Doctors use it to understand the pattern of liver injury.
11.Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
| Parameter | Normal range |
|---|---|
| ALT (SGPT) | 7–56 U/L |
| AST (SGOT) | 10–40 U/L |
| ALP | 44–147 U/L |
| Total Bilirubin | 0.3–1.2 mg/dL |
| Albumin | 3.5–5.0 g/dL |
| Total Protein | 6.0–8.3 g/dL |
Reference ranges can differ between labs. Your report shows the range used by the lab.

Helps detect bile duct obstruction and liver disorders.
