This calculator gives a general estimate and is not medical advice. If you have kidney, heart or liver disease, or your doctor has limited your fluids, follow your doctor's advice instead.
What changes your needs
Body weight and age. Larger bodies need more water, and needs per kg are a little lower in older adults.
Exercise. You lose fluid through sweat, so add more on active days.
Heat and humidity. Hot weather raises sweat loss, even if you are not exercising.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Both increase daily fluid needs.
Illness. Fever, vomiting or diarrhoea can cause dehydration, so drink more and see a doctor if it persists.
Tips to stay hydrated
1Start your day with a glass of water, and keep a bottle within reach.
2Sip regularly through the day instead of drinking a lot at once.
3Drink an extra glass before, during and after exercise or time in the heat.
4Pale yellow urine is a good sign. Dark yellow means you need more fluids.
5Water-rich foods such as cucumber, watermelon, oranges and curd also count.
6Buttermilk, coconut water and plain lemon water can add variety without much sugar.
