About the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Total Test

Also known as: PSA Test, Total PSA, Prostate Specific Antigen

The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Total Test measures the level of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland. It is primarily used to assess prostate health in men. Elevated PSA levels may indicate prostate enlargement, inflammation (prostatitis), or prostate cancer, although higher levels do not always mean cancer.

Why is the PSA test done?

This test helps to:

Screen for prostate cancer (along with clinical evaluation)
Detect enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, BPH)
Diagnose prostatitis (prostate inflammation)
Monitor patients undergoing treatment for prostate cancer
Check for recurrence after prostate cancer treatment

High PSA levels may indicate:

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Prostatitis (infection or inflammation)
Prostate cancer
Recent urinary tract infection
Recent prostate examination or biopsy
Recent ejaculation (temporary increase)

Note: The PSA test is a screening tool and does not confirm prostate cancer. If PSA levels are elevated, your doctor may recommend additional tests such as a free PSA test, MRI, or prostate biopsy.

Who should get this test?

Your doctor may recommend a PSA test if you:

Are 50 years or older, as part of routine prostate screening
Have a family history of prostate cancer
Experience frequent urination
Have difficulty starting or stopping urination
Have weak urine flow
Notice blood in urine or semen
Experience pelvic discomfort
