A screening blood test that checks how your body processes sugar, commonly used to screen for gestational diabetes during pregnancy.
Also known as: GCT, Glucose Challenge Test, 1 Hour Post Glucose, 1-Hour Glucose Screening Test
The Glucose Challenge Test (GCT), 1 Hour Post Glucose is a screening blood test used to check how your body processes sugar (glucose). It is most commonly performed during pregnancy to screen for gestational diabetes, but it may also be recommended for people at risk of diabetes.
During the test, you drink a glucose solution containing a fixed amount of sugar. A blood sample is collected exactly one hour later to measure your blood glucose level. If your glucose level is higher than the normal range, your doctor may recommend further testing, such as the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT).
The Glucose Challenge Test is a simple screening test that evaluates how efficiently your body handles glucose. It helps detect elevated blood sugar levels before symptoms appear.
Unlike a fasting blood sugar test, the GCT generally does not require fasting and is commonly used as an initial screening test during the 24th to 28th week of pregnancy.
Benefits of the Glucose Challenge Test:
A Glucose Challenge Test is recommended for:
Your doctor may suggest this test if you experience:
1.Glucose, 1 Hour Post Glucose
Measures your blood glucose level one hour after drinking a glucose solution. A high value may indicate gestational diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance and may need a follow-up OGTT.
Fasting is generally not required unless advised by your doctor.
Before your test:
| Parameter | Normal range |
|---|---|
| Glucose, 1 Hour Post Glucose (Normal) | Below 140 mg/dL |
| Glucose, 1 Hour Post Glucose (Needs follow-up) | 140 mg/dL or above |
| Note | Cut-off values may vary slightly between laboratories (some use 130 mg/dL). An abnormal result does not confirm diabetes. Your doctor may advise an OGTT. |
Reference ranges can differ between labs. Your report shows the range used by the lab.
No. Fasting is generally not required for the GCT unless your doctor advises it.
